Consistency vs. Real Life: Burnout, Creativity, and 5 Mini Breaks to Take

Let’s normalize taking breaks! Perfectionists, come take a close look at what consistency really means and how you’ve been getting it wrong. Be sure to stay for the 5 mini breaks that will bring more peace to your life.

Why Is Consistency Important?

A quick Google search pulls up millions of results about why consistency is important. It’s something many of us were taught from a very young age. Now, I’m not one to argue with age-old wisdom, but consistency can be a huge trap that leads to burnout.

Let’s take a closer look at what consistency actually means. Consistent is — acting or being done in the same way over time, especially to be fair or accurate. Unchanging in nature, standard, or effect over time. As in, "She’s their most consistent player this season."

Why Are Breaks Essential?

In a world where consistency is praised as the golden path to success in business, creativity, motherhood, and beyond, I’m a girl who needs to take a break sometimes.

Taking breaks helps me thrive in my work. It’s a vital part of my creative process. And in motherhood? Breaks are absolutely necessary for me to show up as my best self.

If you’ve ever felt guilty about taking those pauses, pivots, naps, and year-long hiatuses, know that stepping away is not just okay, it’s essential! Like the seasons in nature, we all need times when we hunker down, get quiet, and prepare to bloom.

An Invitation To Embrace Inconsistency

  • Taking breaks prevents fatigue and reduces stress.

  • Breaks make room for things to sort themselves out. On an energetic level, if you’re always “doing” then nothing will get “done” without you.

  • Breaks fuel creativity and productivity. They give you a fresh perspective and help you make new connections.

Journal to Manage FOMO Feelings

A woman in our community sent this message, "I want to hear how you manage the emotions that arise while taking a break, and then also how the break helps fuel you! I love your authenticity!"

Having a strong connection with my intuition has helped tremendously. Instead of second-guessing and feeling like I’ll miss out on something, I trust in alignment and divine timing. That doesn’t mean I’m an emotionless robot! When my ego, FOMO, and the myth of consistency stress me out, I turn to my journal.

Taking Breaks Fuels Creativity

This break came at a beautiful pivot point in my business. I’m in the process of elevating the website, brand, and overall coaching experience. Not publishing a new podcast episode every week gave me space to focus on the site and my signature program.

Breaks also give me creative confidence.

When you’ve been doing something consistently, then step away for a break, it can feel like a huge effort to dive back in. (The emotion behind this feeling is fear!)

Summing the courage to come back feels like a big sigh of relief. It’s a reminder that, “Ah yes, I do really like this and I know what I’m doing.”

5 Mini Breaks to Bring Peace to Your Days

You can’t always take 7 months away! Add these mini breaks to your daily rhythms for more inner peace.

01. Lookout to shift your outlook.

Watch the trees swaying in the breeze or step outside to feel the sun on your face. Nature’s calming energy will soften your mood and bring you back to the present moment.

02. Listen to mood-boosting tunes.

Put on a playlist that makes your booty bounce or pick calming tracks to soothe your system. Decide what energy you need, plug in your earphones, close your eyes, and let the frequency support you.

03. Rinse and wash the stress away.

Whether it's washing your hands, taking a bath, or doing the dishes, focus on the power of warm water. Notice how it cleanses and soothes, washing away stress and refreshing your spirit.

04. Light a fire, ignite new energy.

Tap into the cleansing energy of fire. Light a scented candle or burn a stick of incense. Feel the peace as the room fills with a pleasing aroma. Let the soothing scent leave you refreshed and renewed.

05. Savor a snack and sip.

Enjoy a favorite snack or beverage. Choose something that brings you joy and savor each bite or sip, noticing the flavors, textures, and sensations. Let this be a simple way to nourish yourself inside and out.

Mini breaks are a simple way to pause, refresh your energy, and find calm in the chaos. Pick just one to try today or fold all five into your usual routine.
