See Yourself Dancing Through Life at 83 — The Magic in Giving It Your All

A Week of Unforgettable Performances

I’m in a “staying-up-past-my-bedtime-with-zero-apologies” season.

See, I bought a bunch of show tickets months ago, never realizing they’d all land in the same week. We went to four performances in seven days!

The Magic in Committing to Imagination

First, we took the kids to an interpretative dance performance inspired by Tetris and Rubik's Cube. It was quirky, to say the least, but the creativity was infectious. Our children were captivated, giggling as the dancers twisted and contorted their bodies, moving like blocks.

It got me thinking about the worlds we can create with our imaginations and how easy it is to invite others in when we’re brave enough to commit.

The Magic in Talent, Dedication, and Joy

Then, the legendary Herbie Hancock. I had no idea until I looked up his bio, but Herbie was a child prodigy. He performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when he was only 11! He went on to join the iconic Miles Davis Quintet and he’s never lost his passion for music. 

Now at 83, he commands the stage with a vibrancy that defies age. Watching him play, sing, and bounce around tirelessly was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when you match talent with dedication and joy.

The (Hilarious) Magic in Vulnerability

And finally, on Saturday, we had the pleasure of catching comedians Mike Birbiglia (with his hilarious opener Gary Simons) and Hannah Einbinder from the very smart and funny show “Hacks” on HBO Max.

It’s been years since I saw live comedy, and I was immediately struck by the vulnerability of a solo performer trying to make a room full of people laugh.

What stood out about all of these performers was their commitment. They were all in, giving their most without holding back. It made me want to show up more fully in everything I do.

One of my all-time favorite quotes is from William Hutchison Murray:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.”
